FAQ - Presale

Do we have to buy a docking station for each mobile unit?

No, each department will receive a docking station at no charge for every 10 units that are purchased. Additional docking stations run $140 each, and are designed to be used with all ID-Mobile removable hard drives. Departments with multiple ID-Mobile units may want to purchase additional docking stations, however it is at the discretion of the agency how many they would like to purchase. At least one is necessary for uploading information to a desktop computer.

If we want additional HDD's, do we have to pay for them?

Yes, there is a cost for additional HDD's and the carriage assembly (which comes with), but the price depends on the size of the hard drive (GB). The HDD's used in the ID-Mobile system are standard 2.5" laptop hard drives, so you can also purchase them from any computer store. The carriage assembly's can only be purchased from Dakota Micro.

Is there a multi-car discount?

We do not offer a multi-car discount because we would rather offer every agency, large or small, the lowest price available, all the time, every time. We don't feel that overpricing in order to give a discount is necessary.

Do we have wireless download? Will we have it?

Wireless download systems have proven to be unreliable and slow. We use a very high bit rate video of up to 4000kb/sec as opposed to the average of 1000kb/sec or less that is used by systems that would offer wireless transfer. At our bit rate the video would take far too long to transfer and would be even more likely to be corrupt by the time it arrives. True, you don't get wireless download with our system, what you do get is the lowest-loss video available on the market today.

What software do we need to be able to copy evidence onto discs?

You can use any DVD or CD burning software to copy video files from the hard drive or archive. Many newer DVD players will play an MPEG 2 video file with no problems and any laptop with WinDVD or PowerDVD would be able to play the files, however if you need to transfer the video into standard DVD playback format for use on an older DVD player you will need to use software such as Super DVD Creator, which is commercially available and rather inexpensive. Copies are available for purchase directly from Dakota Micro.

If an officer is in a crash, will the data be lost and if so can it be recovered?

We use a standard laptop hard drive, which is a very robust hard drive by design and should be able to sustain an impact of significant level. The data is not held in any form of memory but is directly written to a file on the hard drive so any interruption of normal operation such as a catastrophic accident would not affect the current recording. However, it may be necessary to have some data recovery center retrieve the data if the hard drive is damaged physically in any way during the incident. In almost all cases it would be reasonable to assume that the hard drive could be pulled and the data retrieved in the normal way.

Are there tamper-proof mechanisms in the DVR that will prevent people from editing video files?

The DVR HDD is physically secured in the device by a key. The administrator also has the ability to grant limited access to secondary users. If the user does not have this access to delete or format the drive (or any function that may threaten the information stored on the drive) it is nearly impossible for the user to affect the video files recorded on the drive. We recommend that any agency limit the user access rights so as to remove the officer from liability regarding the video files. Once the hard drive is installed into the docking station it is available to any computer user depending on the security limitation of that PC. The key to keeping the data safe is the KEY.

How many user accounts can be set up on one unit?

There is an Administrator user that would have all of the rights and full authority access (all features and functions) of the DVR. There can be up to 4 additional User accounts that have the ability to have access to DVR functions. The Administrator is the one who will set the individual limits and access rights for the functions. Each function has the ability to be limited or granted and we can only recommend which functions typical users should have access to. It is at the discretion of the Administrator to decide the individual access rights.

The only feature that cannot be disabled is the playback function, however it is inaccessible to anyone without the login name and password. If the officer is not to make any review of the recordings, simply do not issue that officer a password.

Does the Wireless Body Microphone have pre and post record if it is activated outside of the vehicle?

The pre and post record functions only when there is a triggered event, remote activation or if a record is prompted from the keypad itself. The wireless body microphone by itself does not have a pre and post record function because the unit is physically OFF until it is triggered.
